Hurricane Emily Category 4 Heads Toward The Gulf

The National Hurricane Center
in Miami Florida issued a hurricane warning for Jamaica and the
Cayman islands. Hurricane Emily is expected to hit the islands
within the next 24 hours.
Emily started out as a
tropical storm in the Atlantic Ocean, and then gained strength
hitting the Caribbean becoming a category 1 Hurricane. The latest
data suggests it is now a category 4 Hurricane using the Saffir-Simpson
Scale with wind speeds nearing 135 MPH as recorded by US Air Force
Reconnaissance Aircraft.
The Hurricane is 265 miles
southwest of Jamaica. Hurricane force winds extend out 45 miles
from the center and tropical storm winds extend out 145 miles. The
speed of the storm is a steady 18 MPH.
The Old Pirate Town of Port
Royal Jamaica has been evacuated. Jamaicans have rushed to buy
emergency supplies and moving from low lying areas. This is the
second time in 10 days that Jamaica has declared a State of
Emergency after Hurricane Dennis came through recently. Dennis
Killed 60 people in total. Dominica recently declared a State of
Emergency for the southern portion of the Island fearing a tsunami.
The Storm is expected to pass
over the Yucatan peninsula early Monday as it makes it's way towards
the Gulf of Mexico. It could possibly the Texas coast later in the
week according to the NHC
forecasts and models.
