Hurricane Emily Category 4 Heads Toward The Gulf

July 15th 2005

Hurricane Emily Gulf of Mexico Jamaica and Texas

Projected Path Model

The National Hurricane Center in Miami Florida issued a hurricane warning for Jamaica and the Cayman islands.  Hurricane Emily is expected to hit the islands within the next 24 hours.

Emily started out as a tropical storm in the Atlantic Ocean, and then gained strength hitting the Caribbean becoming a category 1 Hurricane.  The latest data suggests it is now a category 4 Hurricane using the Saffir-Simpson Scale with wind speeds nearing 135 MPH as recorded by US Air Force Reconnaissance Aircraft.

The Hurricane is 265 miles southwest of Jamaica.  Hurricane force winds extend out 45 miles from the center and tropical storm winds extend out 145 miles.  The speed of the storm is a steady 18 MPH.

The Old Pirate Town of Port Royal Jamaica has been evacuated.  Jamaicans have rushed to buy emergency supplies and moving from low lying areas.  This is the second time in 10 days that Jamaica has declared a State of Emergency after Hurricane Dennis came through recently.  Dennis Killed 60 people in total.  Dominica recently declared a State of Emergency for the southern portion of the Island fearing a tsunami.

The Storm is expected to pass over the Yucatan peninsula early Monday as it makes it's way towards the Gulf of Mexico.  It could possibly the Texas coast later in the week according to the NHC forecasts and models.
