The President
promised to stay the course with regards to Iraq Monday. Speaking
to the 106th Veterans of Foreign Wars’ National
Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah he said his resolve is unchanged.
President Bush told the 15,000 gathered there concerning those that
have died in the war “We will honor their
sacrifice by finishing the task they gave their lives for.”
In a radio address
he said "Our troops know that they're fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan,
and elsewhere to protect their fellow Americans from a savage
enemy.” He believes the safety and security of ever American is at
stake in this war.
In a written
statement the President said we need to take “the fight to the
terrorists in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Horn of Africa and elsewhere.”
He characterizes the War in Iraq as the “central front in the War on
Terror as terrorists there try to block the advance of freedom.”
The President indicated that as the Iraqis stand up, we will stand
down.
President Bush
believes the newly formed democracies in Afghanistan, Lebanon, and
Iraq have encouraged democratic reformers in trouble regions of the
world including Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The President mentioned
progress in Israel where Sharon has begun removing Jewish
Settlements in Gaza and parts of the northern West Bank.
The President told
the group of Veterans "I'm honored to serve as the
Commander-in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces. The men and
women who wear the uniform today are protecting our nation and our
way of life. And they are upholding a tradition of honor and bravery
and integrity set by America's veterans. All of you defended this
country with unselfish courage. You've earned the respect of our
citizens. And so, on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your
service for the cause of freedom and peace."
According to the
President he has increased spending for veterans by 24 billion
dollars. He compared his spending to that done by the
previous administration. According to Bush, spending has increased
at twice the rate as it did during the previous administration for
Veterans services.
