President Give Out Phone Numbers for Those Searching for Lost Relatives

Bush in New Orleans

President Bush spoke to the nation Thursday at an outdoor lectern for a packed audience at the national Cathedral in New Orleans.  He called Hurricane Katrina  “wasteful” and told the audience that his administration has provided immediate assistance to “more than 500,000 evacuee families”.

According to the President the evacuated families received help to pay for food, clothing and other essentials, and he urged evacuees who have not yet registered to contact FEMA or the Red Cross.

Many families have been separated during the evacuation so the President gave a number to aid those searching for loved ones. “Please call this number: 1-877-568-3317 … and we will work to bring your family back together, and pay for your travel to reach them”.  Currently the Department of Homeland Security is registering evacuees who are now in shelters and churches all across the country.

Disaster Relief

The President said “Federal funds will cover the great majority of the costs of repairing public infrastructure in the disaster zone, from roads and bridges to schools and water systems. Our goal is to get the work done quickly. And taxpayers expect this work to be done honestly and wisely -- so we'll have a team of inspectors general reviewing all expenditures.

There is a cautionary note given by Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota "We simply must ensure accountability for these massive expenditures -- so that these dollars don't just wind up lining the pockets of unscrupulous contractors, as we've seen all too often in Iraq," Dorgan told an unofficial hearing held by the Democratic Policy Committee, according to the Washington Post.
