Halo set to
become Movie |

An agreement
between Microsoft and Hollywood will bring the popular X-box video
game Halo to the big screen. In a deal work $5 million dollars plus
a percentage of box office receipts, Universal will oversee the
production and domestic distribution of the film while Fox handles
the International Distribution.
The movie, based on
a space based first person shooter video game, is expected to be
released in the summer of 2007. The final asking price dropped had
dropped from $15 million and 15% of the gross ticket sales after
other studios declined the offer. The new bargain was struck with a
10% cap of domestic box office sales.
According to
Universal the movie will be based on both Halo and Halo 2. The
movie will be centered around a science fiction alien-fighting
warrior named Master Chief. Industry insiders expect a new Halo 3
game to be launched around the same time as the movie.
The script
has been written be British novelist Alex Garland. Garland, who is
best known for writing the novel The Beach and 28 Days Later, has
said that his impression of playing the game was similar to being in
a movie. The director has not been chosen, but an announcement may
be made early next month.
The Halo game
was first released in 2001 and has sold in excess of five million
copies (or $600 million in sales). The sequel was released last
year. Halo developer Bungie’s goal is to find a director “who's as committed to the Halo universe as Peter
Jackson was to Tolkien's Middle-Earth" according to the BBC.
Video games have
been incredibly profitable. Compare the Halo-2 record of $125
million dollars in sales on the first day of release to first
weekend box office sales of movies. This is more than any movie
made in the first weekend. In the past a great movie would spawn a
mediocre video game. This is changing. Now great video games are
spawning movies. If the trend continues, the video game industry
may eclipse the movie industry in sales.
