The New Science Fiction Movie Serenity debuts in Theaters

Serenity Movie - Good Reviews

Sci Fi buffs should be excited about this movie.  It takes place in 26th century outer space.  The movie reunites the defunct Fox network Firefly TV series cast in a wild-west atmosphere big screen Sci Fi drama.  Fox cut the series after 11 episodes in 2002.

The end of the series spurred a cult legion.  The series loyalists call themselves browncoats after the small band of freedom fighters at the shows center.  It is expected that these loyalists will pack the theaters.

The story centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds.  Reynolds runs a transport-for-hire space vessel pulling off small crimes for a living.  He has taken on two new passengers – a young doctor Simon and his telepathic sister named River.

Come to find out, the new passengers are fugitives from the coalition that dominates the universe.  This coalition, or Universal Alliance, will stop at nothing to reclaim the telepath.

To add to the confusion there is a tribe of demented space travelers called Reavers who have de-evolved into savage cannibals. “On one side we have the Alliance, embodied by The Operative, who is utterly intractable morally and will kill anybody,” describes Whedon. “On the other side, we have the Reavers.”

The film premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and is receiving great reviews on the Google movie review site (4.3 out of 5).  Science Fiction fans, including those that have been keen on Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars should love the movie. There are no aliens though.

Serenity is written and directed by Oscar and Emmy-nominated Joss Whedon.  Whedon is responsible for worldwide television hits including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. The film is produced by Barry Mendel.
