Sony Play Station Portable released in Europe with Games and Movies

PSP Console

Sony released its new Play Station Portable (PSP) in Europe expecting them to sell out quickly.  This is predicted to be the biggest launch for an “electrical good” in the UK ever.  Stores opened at midnight to capitalize on early sales.

The small console can play video games, movies, display photos and video images, and store music.  ITN reports the portable is expected to be the number on Christmas gift this year.  The price is £179.99 (or €249).

There are currently 25 to 30 games available for the PSP in different parts of Europe.  Movies can be played on the portable as well.  Currently only two studios support the Universal Media Disc (UMD) format, Dreamworks and Warner.  This is Sony’s new mini disk DVD design that is capable of holding 1.8GB.

The movies and games are viewed on an 11 cm screen.  So far only 18 movies have been released in the UK but it is hoped that 100 will be available by Christmas.  Sony has offered a free Spider-Man 2 movie with each PSP purchase.

The PSP has been available in the US and Japan with over 5 million units sold worldwide.  The PSP Value Pack contains the PSP system with a pouch, 32MB Memory Stick Duo, Battery Pack, Headphones with Remote Control, AC Adaptor, Wrist Strap, cloth and a video/music/game sampler Universal Media DiscT (UMDTM) including several game demos.

Gamers will be able to challenge other gamers over a wireless connection.  Some of the games include Ridge Racer; World Tour Soccer, Everybody's Golf, Ape Academy, 1m Dash, and MediEvilTM: Resurrection.

The PSP features w
ireless LAN capabilities.  This enables users to connect to the internet via a 'WiFi hotspot' and play online across a Wireless Network.  The wireless Ad Hoc Mode allows up to 16 PSP systems to be connected to each other directly.  This allows for head-to-head wireless competition with other neighboring players.

According to Myth Games “Wireless functionality is also cleverly exploited in many of the game titles available at launch; GameSharing allows owners of games such as WipEout Pure and Fired Up to share levels of their game with other PSP users, whilst with WipEout Pure gamers can download new crafts, tracks and other content to Memory Stick to further enhance their enjoyment of the game. FORMULA ONE fans will be able to expand their gameplay with a downloadable end of season pack for F1 Grand Prix, including all the grid line-ups for the season and a bonus historic car.”

On August 24th Sony Computer Entertainment America announced the availability of an all-new firmware upgrade for its market-leading PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) system.  This is designed to complement the comprehensive entertainment experience of games, movies, music, photos and wireless connectivity provided by the revolutionary portable device, the firmware 2.0 upgrade will allow users to take advantage of the unit's built-in Wi-Fi* capability and to wirelessly search the Internet from Internet Access Points or "hot spots". The upgrade will also provide increased Wi-Fi security and personalization tools together with photo sharing and expanded video and audio playback options.
