EA Games, the
world’s largest video game publisher has announced new games for the
Xbox360 console. The Need for Speed, FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World
Cup, NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06 and Madden NFL 06 will be
debuted at Microsoft’s X05 event in Amsterdam on Tuesday and
Wednesday.
EA Games is
expected to release The Godfather, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and
a new game titled Burnout Revenge at a later date. Electronic Arts
is well known for their sports titles.
The Xbox 360
console will be available November 22nd, according to Microsoft.
This next generation console is expected to be very popular and MS
is expected to ship 2 million by the end of this year. The
popularity of the games could determine how well the console sells.
The Sony Play
Station is the primary competition for the X-box. Gamers complained
that there were not enough games launched at the last Xbox start.
Sony’s Play Station sold more consoles than Microsoft and held 68%
of the market share according to Red Herring. The X-box accounted
for a measly 17% of the sales.
With this
announcement by EA, Microsoft stands a better chance of capturing
market share. Sony’s next generation Play Station 3 will not be
available until the spring of 2006. Sony has also lost money in
September ($89.75 million) after expecting a profit last month.
That is the first loss in more than a decade.
Founded in
1982, EA has made some of the most popular strategy games including
Command and Conquer. In 2004 EA sold 1 million units with a revenue
of $2.96 billion. They are headquartered in Redwood City California
and employ 4,800 people. Besides the key sports licensing they have
developed games based on James Bond, The Lord of the Rings and Harry
Potter. Their newest license was Catwoman, based on the new movie
staring Halle Berry. Their online EA pogo.com offers web based
games and has 300,000 paid subscribers with over 13 million visitors
a month.
