Even though gas
prices have fallen, hybrid cars still look like an attractive
investment. Many purchasers have long commutes and figure that if
they can save just a few bucks everyday the total savings over a
year could add-up.
If a driver can
save just 5 dollars a day on gas he can save $1300 a year
(calculated on a 5 day work week). According to the website How
Stuff Works hybrids can get you 20 or 30 more miles per gallon.
Hybrids also emit less pollution.
For the short
term the hybrid technology has won out. Hydrogen cars are
unpractical because it requires so much energy to produce the
hydrogen. Natural gas cars may be more practical in the future,
especially if you can fill your car from home. But what if you run
out of gas away from your home?
What makes
hybrids different? The hybrid combines the advantages of an
electric motor and gas powered engine. The hybrid cars typically
require smaller engines. The hybrid car runs off regular gas and
stores energy in the batteries while braking. Hybrids will also
shut the gas motor off when sitting at a red light. All of these
features help you save money.
There are a few
hybrids on the market in the US. Two popular ones are the Toyota
Prius and the Honda Insight. The Honda
Insight starts at around $19,570+, and the Toyota Prius starts
around $20,510 - $23,000. These prices may have increased over the
last year and may very from dealer to dealer.
The Honda Insight is designed to get the best gas mileage
possible. It is a tiny two seater that takes advantage of
lightweight materials. The Toyota Prius is designed to emit very
low emissions. It is a four door sedan that will seat five.
Many dealers have
long waiting lists. Buyers could wait a month or two for delivery.
Ford and other auto makers are planning new hybrid offering for 1996
including an SUV. Look for the Ford Escape SUV hybrid if you have a
large family.
