Microsoft announced on July 14th
at the Comic-Con International convention that they joined with
Marvel Enterprises Inc with a licensing agreement. Microsoft has
obtained the exclusive rights to create and distribute massively
multiplayer online games (MMOG) using the Marvels Universe of Super
Heroes in their games. These games will be developed for the
Microsoft Xbox360 system and also for Microsoft Game Studios.
Marvel has a library of over
5,000 characters with the more popular ones being Spiderman, Xmen,
Fantastic Four and the Avengers. Anticipated release time for the
Marvel Super Heroes game is estimated to be around 2008.
MMOG’s have grown in popularity
since 1999’s EverQuest and in 2004 with the extremely popular World
of Warcraft, released by Vivendi Universal. The profit potential
for MMOG’s reaches new heights for games. The World of Warcraft
game costs $50 for the software and then the players pay $15 per
month to play online, which is now at more than two million
subscribers. This game is estimated to make more than $500 million
dollars in sales this year.
Currently the Microsoft Xbox and
Sony Playstation have not addressed the potential of MMOG with their
current game machines. Computer owners have been the fans of this
type of game play. MMOG’s are very popular not only in the US but
also in Asia markets as well.
The Microsoft Xbox360 is
expected to be sold this holiday season. Features of the unit
include a wireless controller, interchangeable custom faceplates,
improvements to Xbox Live service to connect to the internet, High
Definition display, and faster CPU processing.
