The University of Southern California (USC) beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl New Years day 32-18. Eighth ranked USC stomped Michigan which was ranked number 3. Dwayne Jarrett caught 11 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns.

USC coach Pete Carroll called the win "A very powerful statement for our program." Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said "I said going into this game, USC is the best defensive team we've played, and there's no doubt in my mind that they are.”

It is uncertain whether Jarrett will stay with USC or go pro next year. Linebacker Oscar Lua said "Now that he's had a performance like this tonight, I'm sure the reins will be free on what he can do and what he can't do. But we hope he stays. We love him here, but the ball's in his court right now."

The best game of the day was the Fiesta Bowl where Boise State beat Oklahoma after the game went into overtime. The No. 9 Broncos squeaked by the No. 7 Sooners in overtime with a two point conversion. The two teams had a combined 22 points in the last 86 seconds of regulation. Talk about a nail-biter.
