The Los Angles Galaxy Soccer team has offered international soccer star David Beckham $250 million for a five year deal to play in sunny southern California. Beckham is more than just a world class soccer star, he and his wife Victoria are celebrities. Victoria, former Spice Girl “Posh”, and David already have friends in the Southland.

The couple is friends with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Everyone expects TomCat to welcome the Brits with open arms. This British import may be a boom for US Soccer as well.

Outside the US Beckham is as well known if not a bigger celebrity than Tiger Woods, but inside the US he is virtually an unknown. "David Beckham will have a greater impact on soccer in America than any athlete has ever had on a sport globally," said Timothy Leiweke, president of the ownership group that operates the Galaxy.

The Galaxy Major League Soccer (MLS) team said in a statement that “The 31-year-old midfielder will join the Galaxy after his contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30.” They claim that the deal has been agreed to and it is believed to be the “biggest” deal in “sporting history”. They say that Beckham is “celebrated around the world for his match winning skills as a player in addition to his overall contributions to clubs Real Madrid, Manchester United and England.”

"This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons," said David Beckham. “After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year.”

Galaxy officials are really hoping this deal will help bring soccer to the US. "We are acquiring an individual that will not only be the best ambassador and the best role model for athletes and fans of soccer, but the best example of what any athlete can and should be”, says Leiweke. “David is truly the only individual that can build the bridge between soccer in America and the rest of the world.”
