(Best Syndication) A strange disease is killing honey bees all over the United State. This is not only a problem for the beekeepers, but also crop growers who depend on bees to pollinate their fruit trees and vegetable plants.

Penn State researchers call the disease “Colony Collapse Disorder”. Growers are uncertain whether bees will be available to pollinate their spring and summer crops, according to a report from UPI.

Apiculture extension associate in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Maryann Frazier said “During the last three months of 2006, we began to receive reports from commercial beekeepers of an alarming number of honeybee colonies dying in the eastern United States. Since the beginning of the year, beekeepers from all over the country have been reporting unprecedented losses.”

There are several possible causes. There may be mites and associated diseases, some unknown pathogenic disease and pesticide contamination or poisoning. So far there is no definitive cause. Crops dependent upon honeybee pollination include apples, peaches, soybeans, pumpkins, cucumbers, cherries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries.
