Oprah tried acupuncture on this show to demonstrate if the needles are painful. One guest asked if there was anything that she could do about her chronic shoulder pain. Dr. Oz said that you should always check with your doctor to make sure it isn’t injured in a way that needs surgery. If it is just pain, Dr. Oz says that acupuncture is an ok method to reduce pain. Acupuncturist, Daniel Hsu is from New York, and was invited on the show to do the acupuncture on Oprah and the guest with the shoulder pain.

Oprah had a flash back to getting her ears pierced last year, and she was frightful. She was leery about having needles put into her body. She just had a blood test, and that hurt. She survived the acupuncture, and said it didn’t hurt like taking a blood test. It didn’t hurt like she thought that it would have.

The guest that had the acupuncture, seemed to have a positive response from the acupuncture treatment. She said that her shoulder pain was gone and she felt good. She said she would definitely do more acupuncture in the future.

Dr. Oz said that you need around 14 needles for the body to release endorphins from the brain. Endorphins make us feel good. Acupuncture works because it triggers the release of the endorphins. Hsu said that the effects of one session can wear off in one – four days. If you continue to do acupuncture sessions eventually the results of removing the pain could become permanent. Acupuncture has been shown to improve mood and to stimulate the immune system.

Dr. Oz believes that global medicine should be an important part of treatments for ailments. This is often called alternative medicine. He believes that there will be more advances in understanding how body energy affects our health and ways to treat ailments by this method. Also he recognizes prayer as energy. The next big medical frontier, he believes, will be in energy medicine.

Another guest asked Dr. Oz what she can do about her urinary incontinence. Every time she laughs she pees. Dr. Oz said that as women age, the bladder can fall down lower. This sagging increases the chances for an accident. Women that have just had a baby may also experience this same urinary incontinence, but usually they will recover from the problem faster. Dr. Oz recommends Kegel exercises were you squeeze the muscles around your vagina to strengthen them. These exercises are also sometimes referred to as pelvic floor exercises. By building up muscle strength it helps to control the bladder. Dr. Oz also recommends avoid caffeine drinks when going out in public. Caffeine can increase the urge to urinate and could increase your chances of having an accident.

Should you douche asked one audience member. Dr. Oz says there is no reason to by stating, “the vagina is a self cleaning oven.” However, he does warn that if irregular discharge is occurring make sure to see your doctor to correct the problem. Douching may be covering up a larger medical problem. Douching has also been shown to increase the chances of having an ectopic pregnancy, and may promote an infection that can lead to infertility. He warns that because you are removing good bacteria, you don’t know what it will be replaced with after you douche.

In the audience, a family doctor, pleaded that women should rinse with water before visiting a doctor for a pap smear or pelvic exam. Dr. Oz also reminds that women should wipe from the front to back when going bathroom to avoid transmitting bad bacteria to the vagina.

Is the Brazilian wax safe? Dr. Oz says yes. The Brazilian wax is full removal of the female pubic hair. He says that pubic hair can help prevent chaffing, but most don’t complain of chaffing after having the Brazilin wax. There is an increased chance for pimples where the hair was removed. If you go to a spa to get the Brazilian wax done, make sure that they do not use the same jar of wax for everyone. Also he says to check the temperature to make sure it is not too hot.

Is Botox safe? Botox is used to remove the fine lines and wrinkle using a very small amount of a type of botulism. The face muscles are paralyzed in the area that receives the Botox injection. Because of this, Dr. Oz says that you should not overdo it and use Botox sparingly. He says that if you can’t use your facial expressions, it can be difficult to relate to people. Dr. Oz says that you should go to either a plastic surgeon or dermatologist that has plenty of experience with Botox. The effects of Botox wear off in about four months.

Another audience member confessed that she bleaches and whitens her teeth daily. She is concerned if this is safe. Dr. Oz said that because of the peroxide used in over the counter whitners, you shouldn’t bleach or whiten your teeth every day. Once you have whiten your teeth, you should only touch them up no more than every two weeks. Dr. Oz even suggest going to a dentist for a professional teeth whitening if you want to have your teeth whitened. Chronically whitening your teeth can eventually make your teeth appear transparent and can also damage the gums.

Is there any treatment for cellulite? Dr. Oz warns that treatments out on the market today consist of a $3 billion dollar industry. The treatments are short lived and don’t last. They are not fixing or removing the cellulite, they just temporarily mask surface of the skin. Cellulite is caused by the fibrous tissue that holds our skin to our body. When fat is stored in the fat cells that continually swell and become like marshmallows. The cellulite is caused when the fat swells up through the mesh that holds our skin to our body. Dr. Oz says that guys are not really worried about cellulite that much.

How do you get rid of varicose veins and spider veins? Dr. Oz says that varicose veins come about due to aging. When the blood isn’t returned back to our heart, it leaks backward through the valve. This causes the blood vessels to swell up. He said that you shouldn’t do anything about them unless they are hurting you and causing you problems. There is surgery to remove the larger varicose veins. Dr. Oz said that it is a procedure that you can go home the same day of surgery.

For spider veins you can either get an injection of saline solution into the vein or get laser treatment. These treatments cause the veins to collapse. Once they are treated the spider veins do not come back.

Is sun exposure bad or good? Dr. Oz says that you need some sun exposure. He recommends 15 – 20 minutes a day during off peak sun hours. He says that your shadow should be long and not to go out during high noon. If you are outside for extended time, you should wear sun screen. Most of the damage is done to our skin by the time we are 20 years of age. Age spots are on the skin are created because of excessive exposure to sun in our life. Once you dry out your skin and lose its elasticity it doesn’t come back. African Americans have a benefit; because their skin is dark they have a natural built in sunscreen of “SP50” Dr. Oz said.
