(Best Syndication) San Bernardino County Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt spoke at the Phelan Community Center at 9463 Sheepcreek Road in Phelan Wednesday night. The meeting started at 6 P.M. and was followed at 7 P.M. by a Zone L Water District meeting.

Mitzelfelt took office after Supervisor Bill Postmus was elected as San Bernardino County Assessor. He mentioned a few points including plans to fight gangs, a new jail for San Bernardino County and regional transportation projects. Another hot top was jobs and plans to make the high desert the “inland port” for distributing products all over the country.

The good news is that San Bernardino’s Standard and Poors rating has gone from an A to A+ this year allowing the country to borrow more money and get more things done. One major concern is crime, according to Mitzelfelt.

Gangs have become a huge problem for San Bernardino. Mitzelfelt said that although the Sheriffs budget is $500 million per year (including the jails), that there is not enough room in the jails and many prisoners are released with no bail collected. He said that San Bernardino is first on the list for a new jail in the state.

One plan in the works is to put GPS tracking anklets on the gang members making it tougher for them to go back to their gangs. He said this was the right time to do it because Jessica’s Law has made tracking possible statewide. He said that satellites can be used to track gang members released from prison.

The Supervisor also said there are plans to label gangs a nuisance by opening a gang injunction unit at the District Attorney’s office. This technique has been used in LA County already. Basically the gang’s activities are recorded and then turned over to the DA. This will allow for a “civil injunction” against the gang.

The new sales tax proposition that passed should open up funds for better roads. Also, a regional transportation plan will allow for new fees to be collected to help improve roads as well. The Cajon Pass will be improved, helping commuters. He also mentioned that the High Desert Corridor should help relieve congestion on Highway 138. Added funds will also help improve the congestion on Highway 395.

All of this infrastructure should help the high desert create jobs. Our airport has the second longest runway on the west coast and the land around it is zoned for industrial and commercial uses. Mitzelfelt has high hopes for the high desert.
