(Best Syndication) The High Desert Mavericks lost to the Visalia Oaks in the last inning of the game last night. The loss goes to Don Sullivan (0-1) who allowed five runs in the bottom of the eleventh inning. The Oak’s Dan Pohlman (1-0) got the win pitching two shutout innings in relief.

The Pinon Hills Elementary students were honored with Outstanding Student Awards sponsored by Argosy University. Things went downhill after the opening ceremonies. The winds were blasting and the temperature dropped below 50 degrees as the Mavericks took a 4-2 lead into the top of the ninth inning, with three of the runs coming with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

But the Oaks came back in the ninth. In the ninth, following a Leyson Septimo strikeout, Pedro Ciriaco reached first base on a fielding error by the shortstop Guzman. After a two out walk to Justin Upton, Cyle Hankerd drew a 1-2 count before slamming an opposite double into right-field, scoring Guzman and Upton to tie the game. High Desert loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before Adam Moore struck out to send the game into extra innings. All in all, twelve Mavericks were left on the base-paths after the bases were left loaded in the seventh and ninth innings.

The game went into extra innings. In the top of the eleventh, Visalia erupted for five runs as Greg Thomson, Justin Upton, Cyle Hankerd, Rusty Ryal and Bryan Byrne connected on consecutive base hits, with Hankerd's single serving as the game winning RBI that scored Thomson. Thomson, Hankerd and Byrne all finished with three hits, with Hankerd leading the way with three RBI.

Visalia has a 5-2 record after Wednesday’s win. The loss ties the Mavericks for last place with the Lake Elsinore Storm who also lost last night to Lancaster. Both teams are 1 and 6. The Mavericks will be playing Lake Elsinore four games @ Lake Elsinore starting tonight.
