Bob Greene’s Best Life Diet weighs in Oprah’s Weight Loss Challenge Participants – 14 Week Weigh In

The Best Life Diet - Bob Greene

[Best Syndication] Oprah has 6 participants that are working with Bob Greene, who is also Oprah’s trainer and weight loss coach, to have them work on losing weight. On yesterday’s Oprah TV show we got to see how they have been doing with their weight loss with a 14 week weigh in.

How did they do?

Barb starting weight 231, now weighs 221

Melissa starting weight 193.2, now weighs 179

Latoya starting weight 189.9, now weighs 184

Tracy starting weight 237.6, now weighs 204

Bill starting weight 293.3, now weighs 256

Tori starting weigh 229.9, now weighs 210

To start the participants off on the right track, Bob Greene coached them on eating and exercising at Cal-a-Vie Spa in San Diego. I thought it was a bit excessive on the exercise, but since they were on vacation, I guess they had plenty of time to do this. The women were allowed 1,500 calories each day for food, while Bill got 1,800 calories. They hiked ups hills, did Tai Chi, worked out in the gym, did power walking, dancing, an obstacle course and the hit a punching bag. So they were kept extremely busy during their spa boot camp.

Bob Greene sat down with each of the participants to discuss what emotional reasons that may have caused them to overeat. He feels that if anyone is excessively overweight there is an emotional problem underlying in every case.

Barb was told on the beginning of this program that she would have to quit smoking. She did and quit when Oprah said that she had to quit. Bob Greene said that you should quit smoking first, because of health reasons, and once you quit smoking you can just end up gaining weight. So take care of the worst problem first, which is to quit smoking. Oprah had her tested for nicotine in her system and the results were announced on the show that she has been nicotine free.

Barb admitted to Bob Greene that she was feeling extremely guilty for leaving her children to be with her father while she went to be with another man. She at first thought that she was just addicted to foods, but after this discussion she really did acknowledge her guilt for doing this to her children.

Melissa admitted to Bob Greene that she had checked out of life and wasn’t present. She was an active person before she got married. Once she got married and had children she got bored. Greene suggested that boredom could also be a hidden anger possibly. She reported on Oprah that she has since come out of this depression.

Bob Greene expressed concern about Tracy at the spa boot camp because from day 1 she was complaining about the exercise. It turns out that Tracy’s mom and dad are very athletic and she protested it with her parents every step of the way. She did learn that walking on the treadmill she could see how many calories she had burned. This was a realization that it takes a whole lot of time to burn of just one Snickers candy bar. This has kept her from over eating a lot of extra calories.

Tori did think of herself as an emotional eater. Bob Greene thought anyone that is obese usually has an emotional hidden problem. She admitted that when she was a child that she felt uncomfortable because the wrong kind of attention was brought to her body, by saying that she will look ‘fine’ when she grows up. She might have put on weight to cover up the body and not attract that attention to it. Tori said the most important thing that she has learned was portion sizes. She has started to read the food labels, and have become aware how much a serving size is and how many calories it has. She also sees the balance between exercise and controlling your portion sizes.

Bill thinks of food as a substitute for happiness. Bob Greene found out that Bill was viewing every aspect of his life as a negative. Not one thing in his life was a positive. Bill has been struggling with weight since he was a young child. He went on his first diet at the age of 8. He has been on a lot of diets, loses the weight, and then regains it all back again. He admits that he feels like he is falling short of not being good enough in life. Bill has been slowing down his weight loss this time around and will not over commit to losing weight what he couldn’t do the rest of his life. He has cut back to exercising only 5 days a week. He is thinking habits for a lifetime.

Latoya got in trouble a bit for only losing 5.9 pounds. She originally lost 6 pounds during the lockdown at the spa in San Diego. Bob Greene said that she is not committed and he thinks she is under reporting what she eats and over reporting how much she exercises. She thought that she could continue to eat out at restaurants and still lose weight. This might have been why she didn’t lose as much weight as she was hoping. She now has been taking her own lunches with her, and she is cooking at home a lot more now. Greene also criticized her for not being honest with herself.
