Rockets Hit Northern Israel From Lebanon – First Since Last Summer’s War– Shimon Peres Selected President By Secret Knesset Vote

(Best Syndication) Two Katyusha rockets fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel Sunday. These were the first fired from Lebanon since last summer's war with Hezbollah guerrillas. No one was hurt, but there was some damage, police and the military said.

The Israeli government says they are watching closely what is happening in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said earlier this week that the situation in the Gaza Strip was disturbing and hoped the Palestinian Authority forces will prevail against the extremist forces to prevent the smuggling of weapons into the area. Since the Hamas has taken control of the Gaza.

On Wednesday Shimon Peres was elected the ninth President of Israel. The President is the head of state in Israel. The origin of the name is in the title of the head of the Sanhedrin (the supreme Jewish political, religious and judicial body in Eretz Yisrael) from the first century B.C.E. to the fifth century C.E.

Peres was elected by a secret vote by the Knesset plenum for a single term of seven years. He succeeds Moshe Katzav who was elected in 2000. As President he will select diplomatic representatives to other countries and meet with officials who visit Israel.

The President of Israel also has pardoning authority and can reduce the sentence of those imprisoned. Unlike the President who is selected by the Israeli Knesset, the Prime Minster is elected directly from the people.

According to the Basic law passed in 1992, the Prime Minister must consult the President only if s/he decides to dissolve the Knesset because s/he feels that there is a majority in the Knesset which opposes the government, and the government is consequently unable to function properly.
