European Union To Resume Aid To Palestinians – US Ends Embargo To Mohmoud Abbas Emergency Government

(Best Syndication) The European Union said Monday that they plan to help the Palestinian emergency government set up by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas after Hamas gained control of the Gaza Strip using force of arms. "The signal is that we support 100%, politically and financially Abbas and his transition government," said Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn.

After Hamas won elections in the Palestinian territories in March of 2006, the EU, which was the largest donor to the Palestinians, withdrew their financial support. The union feels that Hamas was a terrorist organization and they blacklisted the government.

The Bush Administration has also lifted an economic and political embargo against the emergency Palestinian government. The US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice said that "A fundamental choice confronts the Palestinians, and all people in the Middle East, more clearly now, than ever. It is a choice between violent extremism on the one hand and tolerance and responsibility on the other.”

Rice said that Hamas made the choice to impose their extremist policies on Gaza. “Now, responsible Palestinians are making their choice and it is the duty of the international community to support those Palestinians who wish to build a better life and a future of peace."

Many Fatah party members have been displaced or killed. The Jerusalem Post reports that Egypt is trying to arrange passage to the West Bank for more than 300 Fatah group members. The Egyptian crossing has been closed since Hamas took over last week.
