New Library For Phelan And Pinon Hills – Friends of The Library and Summer Reading Program Popular – Building Needed For Lease

Current Library At High School

(Best Syndication) The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to build a new library for Phelan and Pinon Hills. The current library is located at the Serrano High School on Sheep Creek Road east of Nielson Road.

It became evident that a new library was needed when new books came in this year and there was no room to add them. The 2nd District County Supervisor, Brad Mitzelfelt said “I believe the Phelan and Piñon Hills area deserves its own library and I hope to finally make that a reality,”

The new location for the library has not been determined yet. The county is seeking approximately 8,400 square feet of building space with room for about 45 parking stalls. Either a new building or an existing building would be acceptable.

The “Friends of the Library” has helped the library become a popular place for young kids on Tuesdays. The Summer Reading Program (SRP) has helped motivate kids to read during the summer recess. Rafael Magic/End of Summer Reading Private Party will be held on Saturday August 11th for kids who read 35 books.

This summer’s entertainment included Abbit the Great (Average), Scottland Marionettes, One World Rhythm (percussion group) and Rafael Magic. Supervisor Mitzelfelt said “Libraries are a key component to the quality of life of our residents and education of our children. A new library would be a welcome asset to this dynamic rural community.”

The County would establish a long-term lease of the building and would have the option to purchase the building during the term of the lease should funds become available to acquire the facility at a future date.

Proposals for the library must be submitted to the County by September 7, 2007.

Sponsors of the “Friends of the Library” include the Daily Press, Wal-Mart, and the Serrano Teen Friends of the Library.
