Lucerne Valley Water Problems – CHP Asked To Enforce Commercial Vehicle Codes By California Department of Health

Melanie Weaver

(Best Syndication) California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer Melanie Weaver visited the Phelan Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) on Thursday night to explain what happened in Lucerne Valley to the water delivery system. She said the CHP got a call from the California Department of Health at the end of July. The CHP was asked to send some officers to Lucerne Valley to implement some commercial vehicle enforcement on the 1st 2nd and 3rd of August.

The CHP sent a “grand total” of two officers on the 1st and 3rd for a couple hours each day. Weaver said that the officers assigned to the Lucerne Valley for those days wrote a “whopping” three citations for commercial code violations. They did impound two vehicles. One of the drivers did not have a license, and the other had “some gross” mechanical violations.

Melanie said that California passed a law a couple years ago that allowed the impounding of vehicles when the driver did not have a license. Since the passage of this law, hit and run accidents / collisions have declined by 20 percent.

There were vehicles stopped in Lucerne Valley for not have Motor Carrier Permits. Vehicles with this permit will have numbers on the side that start with CA… Weaver needed to stress that the Highway Patrol “is not in the business of turning off anyone’s water.” This is why the CHP headed up the humanitarian efforts in Lucerne Valley to ensure residents had water.

Melanie said that the CHP did not know what the Dept of Health was “planning” only that they asked for commercial vehicle enforcement in that area. She said that the Health Department did not specify “water trucks”.

Best Syndication asked Weaver what prompted the Department of Health to enforce the commercial vehicle code in Lucerne Valley. She said “I don’t know that they actually told us. It is not uncommon for people to call up and say ‘we see commercial vehicle violations.’ ”
