Stroke Cost Estimated at $2.2 Trillion By 2050 – Blacks and Hispanics Hit Hardest – Study Says

Michigan researchers say that the estimated cost of caring for stroke patients in the US will exceed $2.2 trillion dollars between 2005 and 2050. The study found that African Americans and Hispanics will be hit the hardest. The estimated per capita cost of stroke is highest in African Americans: African Americans ($25,782), followed by Hispanics ($17,201) and non-Hispanic whites ($15,597).

Dr. Devin Brown says “The economic burden of stroke in African Americans and Hispanics will be enormous over the next several decades.” Brown is with the Stroke Program at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. She adds, “Further efforts to improve stroke prevention and treatment in these high stroke risk groups are necessary.”

Both Hispanics and African Americans are more prone to ischemic strokes and are more likely to be uninsured, according to Brown. She says African Americans and Hispanics have limited access to quality health care.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of adult disability.

“As these two minority groups age, the impact of inequalities in stroke risk and stroke-related health care will result in mounting economic consequences,” she said. “We hope the study’s findings help public health planners in prioritizing resources and setting research agendas.”
