United Nations Say Israel Used Cluster Bombs in Lebanon - US Investigates whether US Violated Agreement

According to a report from the United Nations, Lebanon is lettered with unexploded cluster bomb “bomblets”. The United States is investigating whether Israel violated a secret agreement in which the bombs were not to be used in populated areas.

There have been 8 deaths and 38 people wounded since the cease fire on August 14th from the un-exploded ordinances. Two of the deaths have been children. In a story that was broke by the New York Times, the bomblets have been found in cities and farms. Comment on this Article on our Forum

UN spokesperson, Dalya Farran, said “There are about 285 cluster bomb locations across south Lebanon, and our teams are still doing surveys and adding new locations every day.” Farran is the with the UN Mine Action Co-ordination Center, which has an office in the southern port city of Tyre. She adds, “We find about 30 new locations per day.”

“A lot of them are in civilian areas, on farmland and in people’s homes. We’re finding a lot at the entrances to houses, on balconies and roofs,” Farran said. “Sometimes windows are broken and they get inside the houses.”

After the story broke, the US postponed shipments of another cluster weapon, theM-26, to Israel. The Times reports that several current and previous U.S. officials as saying that they doubted the probe would lead to sanctions against Israel. Comment on this Article on our Forum
