Rumsfeld Lashes Out At People Who Don’t Support War in Iraq – Blames Media But Not Himself

As the situation worsens in Iraq the Bush Administration has stepped up criticism of those who oppose the war. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld compared today’s situation with the situation with Nazi Germany when one country invaded and occupied another country.

It is quite possible Rumsfeld has felt the heat from those who compare the administration’s actions with Hitler’s Germany. He told the American Legion National Convention (August 29th 2006) that “Those who know the truth need to speak out against these kinds of myths and distortions that are being told about our troops and our country.”

The administration may be beginning to realize that they have involved this country in a war in Iraq that can not be won and will likely get worse over time. Rumsfeld is looking for an scapegoat and has begun pointing his finger at the media. Rumsfeld said the media often paints a “negative picture” of American troops and the work they do. Although I have yet to see the media paint a negative picture of the troops in general, I have seen commentators criticize the actions of the administration. Comment on this Article on our Forum

This just goes to show how the administration has lost touch with reality. Rumsfeld thinks people are mad at the military, but in truth the shrinking poll numbers have to do with the actions of the administration. “That is important in any long struggle or any kind of long war, where any kind of moral and intellectual confusion about who and what is right or wrong can severely weaken the ability of free societies to persevere,” he said.

Without mentioning the shrinking poll numbers Rumsfeld said he is confident that the American people, though understandably influenced by the media, have good centers of gravity and will see the truth.

So what is the strategy in Iraq? Rumsfeld says it is “to empower the Iraqi people to defend, govern and rebuild their own country.” His strategy is to give weapons and training to Muslims in Iraq while hoping those weapons are never used against Americans. Didn’t we help train and arm our friend Saddam Hussein? Why would he think that arming and training a pro-Iranian government in Iraq help the American people? Comment on this Article on our Forum
