Iran Expected To Miss United Nations Deadline – Refuses to Suspend Nuclear Program

alt text

The UN Security Council deadline for Iran is due to end Thursday, with little expectation that Iran will halt their uranium enrichment program. On Thursday the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is expected to report that Iran has not halted their program.

The United States has suspected that Iran has been using their nuclear program to develop weapons. According to State Department spokesman Sean McCormack on Wednesday, “It seems as though (the Iranians) have made it a point to try to defy the international community up to this point.”

So far the Security Council has not announced any plans for action if Iran fails to suspend enrichment and has not scheduled a meeting beyond Thursday’s meeting with the IAEA. US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns is expected to fly to Europe next week for a meeting of the political directors of permanent Security Council members and Germany. The United States will likely call for sanctions against Iran. The UN ambassador said “If they have not (complied with the deadline), we will go to the UN to seek sanctions and it remains our intention to seek sanctions.”

Russia and China could be stumbling-blocks for sanctions. Although China does not want to see Iran have nuclear weapons, they want to keep good relations with the country because they provide China with 14% of their crude oil imports. Comment on this Article on our Forum
