Museum Goes on the Road for High Desert Students

Brad Mitzelfelt

SAN BERNARDINO – The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors today approved funding for the San Bernardino County Museum’s “Museum on the Road” educational program. The program, which is funded by a $15,000 Community Foundation grant, is an educational outreach program for students and residents in the High Desert.

Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt, who has made bringing a County Museum to the High Desert one of his goals, said the program is a good alternative for students unable to travel to the County Museum in Redlands. “Until we get a branch of the County Museum in the High Desert, this is a great option for our students,” he said. “The County Museum in Redlands is at least an hour’s drive away for the residents in my district and this program brings the education experience of the museum to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience its cultural and educational exhibits.”

Through its Education Division, the Museum will provide “Museum on the Road” educational programs to schools and community groups in the High Desert. Programs presented to students will include exhibits that emphasize the archeology, anthropology, biology and geology of the High Desert. The programs are customized for students based on grade level and follow state education curriculum standards.

“Museums are a cultural necessity for school children,” said recently appointed County Museum Commissioner Peter Allan. “I am so pleased that the Board of Supervisors has seen the need to take part of our great museum "on the road". The High Desert desperately needs cultural stimuli for young and old alike.”

Over the next year, at least 120 “Museum on the Road” programs will be presented at schools, libraries and other community centers in the High Desert. It is expected that more than 6,000 students and residents will participate in the day-long of programs.

Schools or community groups interested in arranging a ”Museum on the Road” presentation may call San Bernardino County Museum Curator of Education Jolene Redvale at (909) 307-2669, extension 271 to schedule a presentation.
