The Pope’s recent remarks have brought outrage from around the world, and now Al-Qaida in Iraq has called for a war on "worshippers of the cross." Protesters burned the pope in effigy. The Iraqi militant group posted their comments on a website typically used by Al-Qaida.

Although President Bush has said the apology was sincere, many Muslims insisted Monday that Pope Benedict XVI did not go far enough in his apology. The anger and the apology stemmed from a quote the pope made last Tuesday. The quote called the Muslim religion “evil and inhumane”.

The New York Times reports that Muslims have mixed feelings on the apology. “The pope has apologized, and that’s enough, so let’s calm down,” said Hasyim Muzadi, head of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama. “If we remain furious, then the pope will be proved correct.” The Muslim Council in Britain called the pope’s words “exactly the reassurance many Muslims were looking for.” Comment on this Article at our Forum

The Pope never did say whether he believed the quote was true or not. In his speech at Regensburg University in Germany, he recounted a discussion of Christianity and Islam between a 14th-century Byzantine Christian emperor, Manuel II Paleologus, and a Persian scholar.

“He said, I quote, ‘Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached,’ ’’ the pope said. The Popes speech was primarily about shutting the belief in God out of science and philosophy. Comment on this Article at our Forum
