First Quarter of Super Bowl 42

SuperBowl 42

(Best Syndication) After American Idol winner Jordan Sparks sang the American Anthem, the first quarter began with the coin toss. Official Mike Carey tossed the coin. The Giants called tails and won, taking the ball first. Tedy Bruschi made the opening kick-off.

Dominick Hixon took the ball from the in-zone and ran it past the 20 yard line. Brandon Jacobs took the first two hand-offs for a couple yards. Eli Manning threw the ball for a third down conversion. Then after a few more plays Manning converted again with a pass to Smith. Two players were injured on this third down conversion.

New York Giants

Manning kept handing the ball off to Jacobs. Bradshaw took a hand-off bringing the ball close to the New England 40 yard line, just short of the first down. Then Bradshaw took it again carrying several patriots to the 30 yard line. Another pass completion brought the Giants to within the 20 yard line.

The Giants were unable to convert the third down and Tynes came into kick a field goal. The first drive encompassed 16 plays for 63 years in just under 10 minutes. It gave the Giants three points. Maroney took the kick for the Patriots just outside the inzone and ran for 42 yards. Tynes forced him out of bounds.

Maroney’s run gave Tom Brady a great starting position. Maroney took the ball in the next play for a few yards. Maroney then took the hand-off again for a first 1st down for the Patriots. A Brady pass to Stallworth picked up seven yards. Wes Welker took the next pass for a first down. A couple passes and runs later brought the Patriots within the Giants 20 yard line.

But then the Patriots were stuck at 3rd down and 10 yards within the 20. Brady threw an incomplete but there was a foul on the play. It was pass interference and the Patriots got a free 1st down.

This brought the Patriots to 1st and goal with just inches to go. But before they could capitalize on the drive, the quarter ended. There were only two possessions in the first quarter. Maroney took the hand-off on the right side for the first touchdown.
