Second Quarter Play By Play For Super Bowl 42

Second Quarter

(Best Syndication) The second quarter began with the end of a Patriots possession and touchdown by Maroney on a Brady handoff. Maroney ran the ball around the right side for 6 points. The extra point made it a 7-3 game for New England.

But a messed-up kick by New England put the Giants at their own 40 yard line. Eli Manning started the second quarter with 5 and 7 passing. Manning went long on the blitz to Toomer. The completion was for 30 plus yards bringing the Giants deep into Patriot territory. Jacobs took the ball from the 20 to the 15 right down the center.

But Eli Manning got reckless and threw an interception. Ellis Hobbs intercepted the pass and ran it back to the Patriots 35. This was the first interception thrown by Manning since Hobbs grabbed the ball in the 17th game of the regular season. That was the first turnover and Steve Smith should have caught it.

A quick pass to Maroney brought the ball to the 40. But the Patriots were unable to capitalize and Chris Hanson had to punt. McQuarters took the punt and returned it to their own 37 yard line. But a fumble almost turned the ball back over to the Patriots.

The Giants were unable to capitalize and had to punt it. Welker brought the ball out to the 27 from the 15 yard line. Tom Brady came back out and was sacked by Mitchell. A second Brady sack forced a punt back at their own 14 yard line.

Hanson punted the ball to McQuarters who grabs the ball at his own 40 yard line. So far Randy Moss has not been able to catch one pass. In fact, Brady has not thrown the ball to him at all. That is a testament to the great defense by New York.

Ahmad Bradshaw broke it loose with a 13 yard run to the Patriots 42. There was just 5.5 minutes left in the half. Jacobs then runs the ball down the left side for a first down. Bradshaw caught the ball inside the 30 yard line. It was now 2nd and 7 and just about 3 minutes left in the half.

Manning fumbled the ball and Steve Smith was able to pick the ball up. But Bradshaw tried to bat the ball out of bounds and was called for a penalty. The Giants were now looking at 3rd down and 18 yards. An incomplete pass to Steve Smith brought out the punting squad.

Faulk called a fair catch at the Patriot 11 yard line. Brady threw and incomplete and then Justin Tuck tackled Maroney at the Patriots 3 yard line. The Giants called their first time-out.

Stallworth caught the ball and ran it for a first down to the 26. Brady overthrew Moss on the next pass. A penalty flag was thrown as Faulk ran the ball for a first down. A 10 yard holding penalty against New England brings the ball back. This prompts a New England timeout with 35 seconds left in the half.

As the seconds run down, Faulk catches the ball for a first down. This brings the ball to the Patriot 37. Brady throws to Moss at the New York 44 yard line. That was his first catch of the game.

On the next play Justin Tuck knocks the ball out of Brady’s hand just as he was ready to throw. The Giants gain possession at the 50 yard line. There was only 10 second left in the half.

The Patriot blitz and Manning throws an incomplete pass. New England called a time-out. Manning throws it deep into the inzone for a crowded incomplete. That ended the half 7-3 New England.
