Southern California Edison (SCE) was given a unanimous approval by the California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday to install solar panels on the rooftops of commercial buildings across Southern California.
SCE plans on 150 commercial roof top installations of solar panel arrays that will make 250 megawatts of power. The installation will take 5 years to accomplish this goal. Edison will be able to have other solar-power companies do the installation which could add an additional 250 megawatts of power bringing the total megawatts up to 500. SCE will own half of the solar panels while they will have purchase power agreements with the outsourced installations.
SCE estimates that the 150 rooftops installated with an array of solar panels will cost an estimated $875 million.

Edison said that this is the largest project to implement solar panels on a large scale.
First Solar won two competitive bids to install solar panels that will be owned by SCE. First Solar has already installed 2 megawatts on a roof of a distribution warehouse in Fontana. It will be the largest single rooftop solar array in the nation said Edison. The next installation by First Solar is 1 megawatt array of solar panels on a commercial roof in Chino, California.
Edison International is the parent company to Southern California Edison.
