Health Insurance Rate Comparison – Historical Data Included For Increases In Monthly Premiums – Which Companies Are Best

See Larger Chart Below

(Best Syndication News) Health Insurance rates for some companies have increased substantially since our survey last year in 2008. While the Anthem Blue Cross plans remained about the same, the Blue Shield, and Aetna plans increased 36.05 percent and 53.42 percent respectively (see all of our graphs below). HealthNet no longer offers the same plan as before but has upped their deductible on a similarly priced plan.

Blue Shield

Back in January of 2008 Blue Shield made the grade with two low priced PPO plans (we didn’t include any HMO plans in our survey). The good news for Blue Shield is that they have kept both of their California plans. The bad news is that they have increased their rates (see the chart below).

The Blue Shield - Vital Shield 2900 plan offers low deductible, a high copayment and forty dollar doctor visits. Back in January of 2008 they were the cheapest plan out there. Today their plan is in second place for cost.

The rate of their $4000 deductible plan has changed drastically. The new Blue Shield Savings Plan 4000 is Health Savings Account (HSA) Eligible, but the cost has increased 36.05 percent. This new plan does not even show up in the top ten for cost.

Aetna

The Aetna CA MC 5000 Value plan increased the most on our survey. The new plan, Managed Choice Open Access 5000 has increased 53.42 percent.

Anthem Blue Cross

Anthem Blue Cross kept their premiums the same in our survey. They now offer a lower price plan, Basic PPO 2500, for $72 in monthly payments. This is now the lowest price plan in our survey.

The Blue Cross Basic PPO 1000 offers a $1000 deductible with $3,500 maximum out of pocket. This plan also has a high maximum lifetime payout of $5 million. This is good because health costs are rising quickly. Other plans may offer two or three million in their maximum payouts.

Blue Shield also came up with their Shield Savings Plan 5200 for $88 per month. This plan has a $5,200 yearly deductible. They also limit the out-of-pocket costs to $5,200, but that includes the deductible (see more details far below).
