The mesothelioma attorneys of Weitz & Luxenberg would like the public to be aware of an article dated August 14, 2009 by Cancer Monthly LLC. titled "Chemotherapy for Mesothelioma Tested in Greece." The article describes a chemotherapy study conducted by the Athens University School of Medicine in Greece. The purpose of the study was to determine whether a chemotherapy combination involving gemcitabine plus docetaxel is more effective than the standard chemotherapy treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Currently, there are two standard chemotherapy treatment regimens for malignant pleural mesothelioma. One involves the combination of cisplatin and pemetrexed. Another involves a combination of cisplatin and gemcitabine. The combination of gemcitabine plus docetaxel as a possible chemotherapy regimen was examined because a study of this combination had never been done before.

Gemcitabine (sold as Gemzar) is used to treat various cancers e.g. non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer and breast cancer. Docetaxel (sold as Taxotere) is used mainly for the treatment of breast, ovarian and non-small cell lung cancer.

Researchers concluded that even though the results of the study were not too impressive, they did indicate that the chemotherapy combination involving gemcitabine plus docetaxel had promise.
