Wake up Western medicine: China’s onto you. Since the arrival of the world’s first government-approved gene therapy for cancer drug in 2003, China has been propelled to the front of the pack in the race for a new cancer alternative treatment.

Gene therapy is a technique that uses genes to treat disease. In cancer patients, normal or genetically altered genes are injected into a tumor to replace the bad cancerous cells found there. The drug Gendicine is the world’s first approved gene therapy drug. It has had positive results treating more than 43 solid types of tumors in cases of lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and many more.

This cutting-edge treatment is so far only available in China. The success of this cancer alternative treatment is prompting many in the medical community to wonder when the United States and Europe will catch up and develop their own gene therapy and biological therapy drugs.

Conventional treatments for cancer include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery. If administered promptly and adequately, these methods have been known to cure about one-third of cancers on which they are used. Until recently, the other two-thirds of patients faced unoptimistic chances of survival when using these treatments.

Gene therapy for cancer is most often used in conjunction with these conventional treatments and also with more specialized treatments, such as hyperthermia and cryosurgery. With this integrative approach, gene therapy is shown to significantly reduce the size of tumors and to also improve patients’ overall quality of life by lessening pain and reducing treatment time.

Studies have shown that an increasing number of patients also look for some sort of alternative therapy while undergoing treatments or recovering from disease. These therapies include special diets, exercise routines or natural, herbal remedies. More than 30 percent of Americans now say they have used this sort of alternative therapy as part of their battle with an illness. In China, gene therapy is also often also paired with these types of alternative cancer treatments, specifically the practice of traditional Chinese medicine.

Traditional Chinese medicine includes acupuncture, herbal medicines, massage and more. The use of traditional Chinese medicine is not only to naturally stimulate the body’s immune system, but it has also been proven to ease the side effects of conventional cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Acupuncture and herbal medicines can significantly reduce nausea, prevent vomiting, and help fight fatigue — three of the most common and debilitating side effects caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy..

As debate continues in the West about the effectiveness of new gene therapy and biological therapy, doctors in China are busy proving what so many patients have already discovered about these treatments. And with more than 1,000 patients from all over the world having been successfully treated using Gendicine, it’s apparent the East shows no signs of slowing anytime soon.
