It doesn't take an unlimited budget and a genius mind to make things safer in and around any house or apartment. After all, small choices and a retraining of family members can be the best tools in creating a safer and more secure home, and neither of those things has to break the bank in the least.
The first and most important step in improving the safety in any home is to simply do research and pay attention. For example, if it's a custom to leave windows open during the hot months, even if there's just a short trip to the store scheduled, realize it's time to retrain. Teach people to close and lock all of the windows and doors, even if the trip from the house is only going to take a little bit of time. It doesn't take all that long to rob a house, and if the window is open, then the home alarm system can't be set, making things that much easier for crooks and robbers.

Another important thing to pay attention to is the presentation of your house to the neighborhood at large. Buying a lot of expensive electronics and tossing the boxes, with their telltale logos and pictures, out on the curb is a terrible idea. That is basically advertising to would-be robbers what goods await inside. Be covert when purchasing expensive items. Likewise, if the living room hosts a large-screen television and many other expensive goods, don't put those prominently in the line of vision from the street. The most important step towards home security is knowing how to make your house look undesirable to criminal elements.
Inside the home, a lot of simple steps can make a functioning home alarm system that much more effective. For one, closing all doors and windows is a step in the right direction. Another obvious tip that is so often forgotten is remembering to turn the darn alarm on in the first place, and making sure that everyone else in the family does, too. After all, you're paying for that alarm system, so you might as well use it.
Other important and inexpensive steps towards keeping one's home more safe are always leaving a car in the driveway, making sure to leave lights on, investing in an outside motion-sensitive light system, and knowing neighbors. In fact, simply talking to the neighbors, or joining a neighborhood watch, is a huge step towards great home security. After all, if everyone is using their eyes to pay attention to the condition of the neighborhood, then every single person fares better in the long run.
No matter the budget, the number one asset for keeping a home safe and secure, after taking care to follow the simple steps that make things significantly better, is to just go ahead and get a home alarm system. Not all of them cost an arm and a leg, and nothing acts quite like a blaring alarm at getting a robber out of a foyer and back on the street.

Even with the best precautions taken in a home, it's still a good idea to call up ADT security and get an estimate on a solid alarm system. With an adt security system, there's a lot less time for worrying, and a lot more time for enjoying your home.
