(Best Syndication News) New research indicates that a prescription version of the B-vitamin niacin is more effective at slowing the buildup of plaque on the artery walls than prescription Zetia. This falls in line with a study earlier this year which showed that Vytorin, a combination of Zetia and Zocor, didn’t work any better than Zocor alone.
Researchers are now wondering whether the drug works at all. Zetia is unique in that it is supposed to work in the digestive track to reduce cholesterol. This was not necessarily bad news for Merck, the maker of Zetia, as their shares rose 2.3 percent on Monday. Abbott was up about 1.6 percent.

Abbott Labs makes Niaspan, an extended release form of Niacin. An Editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine questioned the study, wondering if niacin, the active ingredient in Niaspan, should be the preferred supplementary agent. Some experts expected Niaspan to win.
In previous studies it was shown that niacin worked better in combination with a statin than another double-cholesterol-lowering drug combo, ezetimibe and a statin. In this study they measured the carotid arterial wall thickness in the neck to gauge the measure of atherosclerosis.
