Von Trapp Family History – The Family behind The Sound Of Music Musical
[Best Syndication News] One of the most popular musical of all time is The Sound of Music musical which was written by Rodgers and Hammerstein and opened on Broadway in 1959. What is interesting is that there was a real family that sang named the Von Trapp family. The Sound of Music musical was based on the memoir written by Maria von Trapp called “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.”
The real life stepmother, Baroness Maria August von Trapp was born January 26th, 1905 and died on March 28th, 1987. She was the matriarch of the Trapp Family Singers. She wrote about how her family escaped from the Nazis. She was an orphan as a child and had planned on becoming a Roman Catholic nun when she was around 18. She had already entered the monastery in Salzburg. She was still a candidate at the time when she was asked to teach one of the seven children of naval commander Georg Ludwid von Trapp. He was a widower because his first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp died of scarlet fever.
Maria didn't become a nun, instead she hit it off with Georg and she married him on November 26th, 1927.
The Von Trapp family lost their family fortune after putting their money in a bank that failed. They fired their hired help and moved upstairs so they could rent empty rooms below to Catholic University Students.
The Von Trapp family turned into a musical act, after performing at a festival in 1935. The von Trapp family began touring as their popularity grew.
The ended up moving to Italy after the Nazi's annexation of Austria in 1938 and then they moved from Italy to the United States shortly thereafter. They called themselves the "Trapp Family Choir" and would perform in both the United States and Canada. The family recorded a series of 78 rpm discs for RCA Victor in the 1950. In 1957 the Trapp singing group disbanded and went their separate ways.
