[Best Syndication News] On The Oprah Winfrey show today, it was all about type 2 diabetes and what we can do to prevent the disease and halt the damage that it creates. The first part of the show discussed how the disease works and the second part of the show had an intervention and a success story of a chef that had reversed his diabetes with diet and exercise. This is article discusses the second half of the show.
Dr. Ian Smith participated in the Diabetes intervention on Oprah's TV show today. He is well know for his creation of 'The 50 Million Pound Challenge' which was created to challenge the population's problem with obesity with the goal of weight loss. Smith is currently the medical/diet expert on VH1’s 'Celebrity Fit Club.' He is also the author of several books, including 'The Fat Smash Diet.'
Today, Dr. Ian Smith joined up with Oprah and fitness trainer / weight loss coach, Bob Greene, to do an intervention of African American women at a church in Dayton, Ohio. These women either have type 2 diabetes or are at risk for developing the disease. Dr. Oz was also on the show in an earlier segment discussing how diabetes works and what could happen if it is not taken seriously, he also joined the discussion in the later part of the show as well.
Dr. Ian Smith said African Americans are twice as likely to have type 2 Diabetes and suffer complications from the disease. Smith visited the women members of the church in Dayton Ohio. There was a large number of these women that have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The ladies at the church start with a blood glucose test, followed with Dr. Ian Smith counseling them on how serious a matter high blood sugar levels can be.
Dr. Ian Smith spoke with the audience and Oprah about why it is hard to get people with diabetes to change their lifestyle and eating habits. He said that habits are tough to break and African Americans don't want to change their eating habits and can be quite stubborn about it. He added that it is a disease about attitudes and that is what needs to change to treat Type 2 diabetes.
Dee Dee who was one of the church ladies that has diabetes said that she will be taking better care of herself since this intervention.
Dr. Smith continued to explain that African Americans are often times diagnosed at the later stages when damage has already set in. Dr. Oz added that you can reverse Type 2 Diabetes, but the damage is often already done and it that can't be reversed.
Dr. Smith stressed the importance of action early on by saying, why wait until it is crisis situation, do something about it now. He added that diabetes takes years and years for the complications to occur, which is why people put off changing their habits. Dr. Oz said that taking pills is more like patching up the cracks and isn't reversing the problem.
Bob Greene wrote a book called The Best Life Guide to Managing Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes . Greene said that both of his parents have diabetes, and he said that lifestyle is important way to prevent and treat diabetes. Greene said that we don't move like we used to and that is creating more diabetes in our society. Bob Greene stopped in on the Ohio church ladies intervention to help work them out. These ladies don't wear pants ever, so they were wearing skirts to workout in.
Greene said that exercising 30 minutes a day will reduce your risk for getting Diabetes by 60 percent. He said that exercise is important for anyone with diabetes. He demonstrated weight training with dumb bells. He said to walk 30 minutes 5 days a week. Greene's mantra is “exercise in non-negotiable.”
Greene talked about hidden sugar in ranch salad dressing. Sugared soda should be removed from the diet. Greene said that if you consume 1 soda with sugar a day you increase your chance of developing type 2 diabetes by 80 percent. He showed how much sugar was in donuts as well as the other foods.
Dr. Oz recommends not eating white flour, sugar, and white rice. Dr Ian Smith recommended to stay away from fried foods and steam and bake your foods instead.

Oprah's Chef was diagnosed with diabetes and reversed his diagnosis after losing 80 pounds. His parents have diabetes and he was terrified by the diagnosis. His first goals was to lose 50 pounds.
Oprah asked how is he able to reverse it? Dr. Oz measured the chef's waist, he said that once the belly fat disappears it reverses the insulin resistance.
The chef gave tips to making fried chicken healthier. He said that he takes away the skin and uses low fat yogurt and makes healthier fried chicken. Bob Greene showed a reduced fat corn bread and eat legumes (pinto beans). Greene also added that cider vinegar reduces the sugars effect which will change the way your body handles it.
Dr. Oz said that you if have symptoms of diabetes you should check it out with a doctor.
Walgreens Drug Stores have teamed up with the Oprah Winfrey Show to offer free blood glucose tests. From 11 am to 7 pm tomorrow (February 5, 2010) you can go to a 24 hour Walgreens or an in-store Walgreen's clinic they will do a free blood glucose check.
