(Best Syndication News) Apple says they have sold their 10 billionth iTune. The winner of the iTune Countdown to 10 Billion Songs was Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia who purchased “Guess Things Happen That Way” by Johnny Cash.

iTunes has been an important part of Apple’s business strategy. The nine year-old service was introduced by Apple on January 9, 2001 at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. The latest version of the iTunes Store was released in September and is available for free for most operating systems. The older version of iTunes is still available for legacy operating systems including Mac OS 9 and Windows 2000.

The company is grateful and proud of their accomplishment. “We’re proud that iTunes has become the number one music retailer in the world, and selling 10 billion songs is truly staggering,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services.

Their current catalog includes 12 million songs, over 55,000 TV episodes and over 8,500 movies. Apple has worked hard to keep the price of music down. At times there has been friction between the company and record labels.

Now Apple CEO Steve Jobs is turning his attention to books, newspapers and magazines. The company announced the Apple iPad to facilitate in the distribution of those products.

Apple now hopes people use their iBookstore like they have the iTunes Store. Apple is late in the game this time and faces some stiff competition from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Sony. Google is also rumored to be developing their own tablet.
