(Best Syndication News) - A recent trial study found that people who take calcium supplements might have a 30 percent higher risk for having a myocardial infarction or cardiovascular event. The reason why many elderly people take calcium supplements is to help build stronger bones because of osteoporosis. This study was published on the online bmj.com website.
The researchers wanted to further investigate previous research that found calcium supplements were showing an increased risk of heart attacks. In this investigation the researchers studied 12,000 patients in 11 randomized controlled trials of calcium supplements that did not have an additional vitamin D.
The researchers saw a consistent increased risk of around 30 percent higher for calcium supplement takers for a chance of a having a heart attack regardless of age, sex, and supplement taken. They also saw a non-significant increase for stroke risk and mortality. The authors caution that calcium supplements being so common could contribute to more heart disease across the mass population.
The study did not see an increase heart attack or cardiovascular risk when the person ate foods high in calcium in their diet, they said the increased risk was specific to taking calcium supplements.
