(Best Syndication News) - Lack of sleep can slow down the weight loss process. So if you want to lose weight quickly you should make sure to get enough sleep each night. Researchers studied how the lack of sleep and the slowing down of weight loss occurred in individuals and reported their findings in the October 5, 2010 Annals of Internal Medicine.

The researchers found that when dieters slept less they lost less fat compared to those that had received a sufficient nights sleep. In addition to this the ones that didn't get enough sleep also reported feeling hungrier because of they had higher levels of ghrelin hormone that makes you feel hungry.

The research director, Plamen Penev, MD, PhD who is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago said that the lack of sleep reduced fat loss by 55 percent.

The study was with 10 overweight individuals ranging in age from 35 to 49 years of age. They had a Body Mass Index (BMI) rating of 25 and were not obese, just overweight. They were healthy as well, and were put on individualized diet that restricted calories to 90 percent of what was needed to maintain body weight without exercising.

The researchers had 14 days where the participants would have 8.5 hours of sleep each night and then the same participant would go for 14 days with only 5.5 hours of sleep each day. The participants slept on average 7 hours and 25 minutes on the 8.5 hour phase and they slept on average 5 hours 14 minutes on the 5.5 hour phase. On average they each consumed around 1450 calories each day throughout the entire study.

The weight loss was the same during each of the 14 day sessions. They lost on average 6.6 pounds each 14 days. The difference was in the amount of fat loss that occurred. The longer sleep showed the participants lost 3.1 pounds of fat on average while the shorter sleep they lost only 1.3 pounds of fat. The remainder of the weight loss was the fat-free mass which was made up mostly of protein.

If you want to loss body fat you might want to make sure that you get enough sleep when you are dieting. If this study is correct, getting enough sleep could help you keep your muscles and lose the fat more efficiently.
