The Dukan Diet explored on the 'Dr. Oz' TV Show

(Best Syndication News) - On the 'Dr. Oz' TV show today, Dr. Oz explained The Dukan Diet and had a panel of experts to critique the weight loss plan. France has had a popular diet called The Dukan Diet for quite sometime. Now it has reached the Americas with the release of Dr. Pierre Dukan's book “The Dukan Diet: 2 Steps to Lose the Weight, 2 Steps to Keep It Off Forever.”

Dr. Pierre Dukan has sold over 5 million copies of his book worldwide. Kate Middleton was rumored to have turned to The Dukan Diet to lose weight before her wedding to Prince William. The diet is different from the Atkins low carbohydrate diet because he limits the amount of dietary fat and the kinds of meat you can eat.

The diet is based on the low carbohydrate idea in the first two phases, but changes over to a more regular diet in the last two phases. On the Atkins diet you would have to remove or keep the carbs reduced from the diet to keep off the weight. Dr. Dukan's diet includes fat that comes from fat in fish and eggs in the initial phase and limits the fat intake and allows for non-fat dairy products. The Dukan Diet plan in the last phase will let you eat six days of anything you want, but you have to follow the first phase of the diet once a week in order to maintain the weight loss.

The first phase of the Dukan Diet is called the “Attack Phase.” In this phase you can eat as much lean protein you want. Typically you would be on this phase between 1 – 10 days depending on how much weight you are looking to lose. There is no calorie restriction or counting calories on this diet. You can have all the non-fat dairy products. You have to eat 1 ½ tablespoon of oat bran each day during the Attack Phase.

Dr. Oz showed an example of what you might eat on the “Attack Phase” of the Dukan Diet. A sample day would have a serving of non-fat yogurt along with a hard boiled egg for breakfast. For lunch you could have salmon and along with oat bran pancakes, which is made with the oat bran and egg whites. Dinner would be a simple protein meal with no carbs such as chicken breast. During this phase you could lose up to 10 pounds in about a week.

One expert sitting on Dr. Oz's panel said that you lose about half the weight from water, so you can lose electrolytes and you could become dehydrated. He mentioned that one teen died from following a low carbohydrate diet. On Dr. Dukan's website he said that the Attack Phase lasts usually between 2 to 7 days and reminds to drink at least six 8 ounces glasses during the diet.

On the Official Dukan Diet website, Dr. Dukan explains that the Oat Bran you must eat on this diet gives you a full feeling and can help lower cholesterol. Plus oat bran slows down sugar from being absorbed into the body. He explains that 15 grams of dry oat bran can swell up to 25 times with liquid. The oat bran that Dr. Dukan recommends is M2bis-B6 grade oat bran which offers the best results. If not available, just make sure that it says 100% oat bran on the package and do not eat the rolled or steel cut oats because it is not the same thing.

The second phase of the diet is called “The Cruise Phase.” Now you can add non-starchy vegetables every other day. You can add greens, such as lettuce, broccoli, cabbage to your meals. Dr. Dukan's book lists all of the different non-starchy vegetables you can eat. You only get to eat the non-starchy foods every other day. Also you will be eating 2 tablespoons of oat bran per day during this phase. One critic on Dr. Oz's panel said he thinks this is a fad diet and that there are plenty of ways to eat healthy and lose weight without restricting nutrition. Dr. Oz had a person that lost 36 pounds using the Dr. Duakan Diet plan. She had spent six months eating in phase 2 of the diet plan which could limit nutrition.

Phase three is called “The Consolidation Phase.” This is about adding carbohydrates back into your diet. You can have fruits and vegetables, and some cheese. You can have two celebration meals of anything you want each week. You will continue with the 2 tablespoons of oat bran per day. On Dr. Dukan's website, he explains that you have to spend 5 days in the “Consolidation Phase” for every pound that you lost on the diet. So if you lost 20 pounds you would be on this phase for 100 days.

One critic on the panel of the Dr. Oz show warns that a person who is diabetic could possibly burn out their kidney from being in ketosis that long in phase 2.

Dr. Oz had another Dukan dieter on the show who had experienced the phase three and he said that he had a difficult time controlling his carbohydrate intake during this phase and ended up gaining back almost half the weight he lost. He still wants continue to diet so that he can lose the weight again.

The final phase is called “The Stabilization Phase.” This is were you remain to maintain your weight loss. One day each week you are only going to eat protein like you would during the “Attack Phase.” It has to be the same day each week. You have eat your oat bran of 3 tablespoons per day from now on. Dr. Dukan also wants you to walk 20 minutes everyday.

One critic on Dr. Oz's show, said that when you allow people to eat unlimited it would probably lead to weight gain in America. Overall, the first judge gave it an 8 saying that she likes the structure the diet gives because it give the dieter a boost to get them started and helps keep them engaged. The last phase she didn't think Americans could accomplish successfully because people will probably overeat and gain the weight back. The second critic gave it a 1 but would give it less if he could. He said that it is a fad diet and it would lead many to yo-yo diet with weight going up and down and he said that a hormone could increase because of weight changes which could increase a person's breast cancer risk. The nutritionist critic gave it a 5 because it is lean protein and they do have people eat vegetables and she likes the walking.

Dr. Oz said that it makes the most sense to eat a healthy balanced diet. But he says that it is more important to lose the weight and keep it off even if the nutrition isn't the best. He did agree with the doctor on the panel and said that you shouldn't gain and lose weight and gain it back again.

When starting any diet or exercise program you should always consult with your doctor first. The Dukan Diet is not recommended for individuals that have kidney problems, for adolescents, for pregnant or breast feeding women, or with either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetics.
