Stock Market Today – Phillips-Van Heusen PVH McDonalds MCD and Pfizer PFE spotlight

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets around the world were higher today with the exception of the Canadian Stock Exchange (see charts below). There was some good and bad news today.

There may be a deal in the works to solve the Greek debt crisis, but U.S. consumer confidence is declining and housing prices are lower. Investors were still optimistic today.

Buyers like to see good dividend yields. The earnings season has been mostly positive, putting upward pressure on stocks.

Dow Jones

The Dow Jones Industrial Average index (DJIA) surged 128.21 points (+1.03%) to 12,569.79 today. Only one Dow constituent was lower.

McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was the lone loser, but down only 0.10 percent (see constituent chart below). This was the third straight day of declines for the Golden Arches. Over the last 30 days the share price is still up 5.90 percent; and perhaps investors believe the price is too golden. The P/E is 17.24 on the $85 billion company.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) was the big winner today. The share price was up 0.52 (2.48%) to $21.45. In after-hours the price fell 0.35 (-1.61%) to $21.10. After the market closed it was disclosed that a lawsuit was dismissed in a New Jersey District Court between Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NASDAQ: TEVA) and Pfizer. The parties were able to come to terms and settle.

Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation (NYSE:PVH) was down 0.61 (-0.92%) to $65.97 a share. The company released their Q1 2011 earnings statement today. The Street had expected $1.16 eps.

“Earnings per share was $1.23 on a non-GAAP basis, which exceeded the Company's guidance and the consensus estimate and represents an increase of 48%, as compared to the prior year's first quarter non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.83,” the company said in a statement.

Since the close Tuesday, the share price jumped 1.32 (2.00%) to $67.29.

S&P 500 and Nasdaq

The S&P 500 index was up 14.10 points (1.06%) to 1,345.20 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 38.44 points (+1.37%) to 2,835.30.

All of the S&P sectors were higher today. Energy, materials, industrials, health care and info-tech were all up more than one percent (see sector chart below).
