405 Freeway Closure this weekend is being called ‘Carmageddon’

Cars - BSN

(Best Syndication News) - CalTrans will be closing a portion of the 405 Freeway this Friday July 15 at 7 p.m. and will reopen ramps on Monday July 18 around 6 a.m. The reason for the freeway closure is so that road construction crews can start working on a road-widening project.

It is possible that other roadways will be congested, which has prompted the local Los Angeles ABC7 news network to call this road closure event “Carmageddon.”

The Metro.net website said that people should expect extreme congestion along Sepulveda Boulevard. The delays could be long and should plan accordingly. They even suggest avoiding Sepulveda Boulevard altogether if possible and plan a different travel route.

The 405 Freeway going through the Sepulveda Pass will be closed for the weekend. On the Northbound I-405 Freeway, the 10 mile stretch will be between the I-10 and U.S. 101. Going Southbound on the I-405 Freeway there will be a 4 mile closure going between U.S. 101 and Getty Center Drive ramps.

CalTrans has to close the freeway in these sections because there will be three bridges that need to be demolished in order to move forward with the expansion for additional Carpool lanes and better bridges. Metro Net and CalTrans report that this road construction project will cost $1 billion, which will be completed sometime in 2013.

The best way to not be caught in a traffic jam this weekend is to avoid traveling on freeways surrounding Los Angeles. If you must travel you might want to keep updated at Sigalert.com to find out how much traffic congestion is on each freeway.
