City of Palmdale determined to keep California High Speed Rail Stop - Seeks Injunction to halt Alternative Route Study

See CHRSA presentation below

(Best Syndication News) - The City of Palmdale has filed a motion in federal court for a preliminary injunction against the California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA). The city wants to halt an Interstate 5/Grapevine alternative high-speed rail route study. The City of Palmdale said that the CHSRA is using state and federal funds illegally to conduct a study that was already completed in 2005. United States District Court Judge Burrell is scheduled to hear the motion for injunction on August 22, 2011.

The Grapevine alignment for the High Speed Rail project was studied in 2005 and was rejected said the Palmdale City Attorney Matthew Ditzhazy. Additionally, the California Attorney General said that the CHSRA could not use Proposition 1A bond funds to change the route. The CHSRA is looking to possibly remove the Palmdale stop and realigning with the 5 freeway.

The City of Palmdale filed a lawsuit in United States District Court earlier this month to stop CHSRA spending money on an alternative route.

According to the CHSRA, the 2005 studies were preliminary. The next step as explained in a presentation from the CHSRA, is to develop detailed review of each section of the railway route (see below).

Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford said in a statement, “The Antelope Valley route with a stop in Palmdale will not only will reach millions of people, unlike the Grapevine alignment, but it will also provide a unique link to the intermodal connectivity coming to Palmdale that includes a regional airport, a Metrolink Station, the High Desert Corridor freeway alignment at Avenue P-8, State Routes 14 and 138 and the soon-to-be started Desert Xpress train to Las Vegas.”
