Exercise improves Memory and Brain Function

(Best Syndication News) - Researchers reviewed over one hundred studies on exercise and the effect it has on the brain. They concluded that aerobic and strength-training exercises are important for preserving brain and cognitive health. The “Exercise, Brain and Cognition Across the Lifespan” report is published in the online edition of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

Michelle W. Voss, of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her colleagues reviewed 111 current animal and human studies to highlight the brain function benefits from aerobic exercise and strength training workouts for humans at all ages.

The report said that physical inactivity is associated with students having poorer academic performance and lower standard neuropsychological test scores. Exercising helped to improve memory, concentration, and judgment making. The report said that exercise was beneficial to all age groups.

Aerobic exercise was associated with improving executive functions, which includes planning, multi-tasking, and inhibition. Additionally, aerobics also increased the amount of brain structures, which is an aspect for memory function.

Research for strength training's association with brain fitness with children is limited. There are some studies for adults that suggested that high-intensity and high-load strength training workouts could improve memory function.

The research report concluded that many studies find that both aerobic and strength training workouts offer benefits for brain health and function. They suggest more research would be necessary to understand the reasons why exercise is good for the brain.
