LULAC Contests San Bernardino Redistricting Plan

(Best Syndication News) Although the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved a redistricting plan, there may be a snag.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of the Inland Empire announced that the plan does not comply with the Voting Rights Act and offered three alternative plans of their own. The group will contest the current plan.

According to David Wert, spokesperson to the county, the organization stated that "there is still only one Latino majority district in San Bernardino County under the current draft maps proposed by the Board of Supervisors”. LULAC says that there should be at least two Hispanic majority districts.

The county has been working on a redistricting plan since receiving 2010 census data.

Wert tells Best Syndication that the redistricting plan approved by the Board of Supervisors on August 9, 2011, does in fact fully comply with "the applicable provisions of Section 1973 of Title 42 of the United States Code. The plan has been reviewed and certified by the National Demographics Corp.

Wert says under the redistricting program, both district four and five will carry a Hispanic majority (57% and 69% respectively).

LULAC is a well organized non-profit advocacy organization which provides services in 34 states. The local group held a meeting in Colton pertaining to this issue on Tuesday night but we have not been able to reach the local chapter for comment. It appears that both sides may be prepared for a legal battle.
