PINON HILLS Calif. – The smoke has dissipated from the Oasis Fire near Pinon Hills that consumed 345 acres on Saturday. Although winds can be a concern, the winds blowing in the easterly direction were light on Saturday, only three to six miles per hour.

The high heat combined with dry brush was a major problem. The fire is still under investigation, but a lightening strike could have been the culprit.

Firefighters from Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles were called out to help San Bernardino County firefighters.

Although dubbed the Oasis Fire, it was on the Los Angeles / San Bernardino County line. Oasis is the major north-south thoroughfare located in Pinon Hills, an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County.

During part of the day on Saturday the Highway Patrol was holding up traffic along State Highway 138 near the county line. Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service were also involved in the battle. There was a concern that if the fire hit the dry timber of the Angeles National Forest, a major forest fire could ensue.

Fire-lines were drawn and the fire was contained to brush of the high desert.

There were a total of 355 firefighters on the scene battling the Oasis Fire, with 25 engines call out, 17 fire crews, five airtankers, five helicopters and one watertender.

Witnesses said that lightening struck right before the fire broke out. The fire, which was mostly located in rural Los Angeles County, is 70 percent contained on Sunday, according to Cal Fire. No smoke can be seen from Pinon Hills.

No structures are currently threatened.
