Los Angeles 4.2 magnitude Earthquake near San Fernando, California

(Best Syndication News) - Los Angeles and Orange County residents may have felt a 4.2 magnitude earthquake today, September 9, 2011 at approximately 1:47 PM local time. Shortly thereafter, there were two more tremors, a 2.6 magnitude and a 2.9 magnitude occurring in the same area. The earthquake today epicenter was in the San Fernando Valley, only four miles from from the city of San Fernando, California.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) logged the exact location of the 4.2 earthquake as 34.339°N, 118.475°W with a depth of 4.5 miles. Nearby reports said that the earthquake felt weak to light.

At 01:53 PM, local time there was a 2.6 magnitude aftershock. Then around 02:35 PM local time, another 2.9 magnitude aftershock occurred. This aftershock initially measured 3.0 but was later downgraded.

On February 9th, 1971 a magnitude 6.6 earthquake rocked the San Fernando Valley near Sylmar at 6:00 a.m. PST. That earthquake ruptured a segment of the San Fernando fault zone. These are north-dipping, high-angled reverse faults along the San Gabriel Mountain range.
