Flash Floods in Pinon Hills

PINON HILLS Calif. – The rains started a little bit after noon, but by 2 pm it really began to pour. The electrical power in the San Bernardino County community of Pinon Hills at the transition between the desert and the mountains began to sputter as lightening began to strike transformers.

The weather reports were conflicted Monday as forecasters predicted a 70 percent chance of rain Tuesday. The deluge continued until around 3 pm when residents got a respite from the downpour.

Pinon Hills resident, Nancy Cosgrove, tells Best Syndication News that Highway 138 was closed for a short period of time as rivers began to engulf the state route. Green Road and Mountain Roads became rivers for the uncontained water.

Rocks and gravel were pushed into the hillside roads as the torrent of mud and water roared down from the mountains. Residents reported flash-flooding.

The roads were so bad that Pinon Hills Chamber of Commerce President, Jane Rowan, canceled tonight’s chamber meeting.

American Weather & Hydrology, a local weather service with contracts throughout the world, predicted the thunderstorms. Phil Barone tells Best Syndication that the storm consisted of large rain drops, crackling lightning and loud thunder. “We lost power three times”, Barone added.

It was difficult to leave the hills because all the roads were flooded. Barone was finally able to leave his offices around 2:30 pm to chase the storms.

The National Weather Service is forecasting scattered showers and thunderstorms before 11pm tonight. Wednesday should be sunny with a high near 88 degrees.
