Public Redistricting Meeting Announced

(Best Syndication News) As the deadline for redistricting approaches, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has announced a public meeting.

David Wert, spokesperson for the county, tells Best Syndication that the meeting will be held at noon on Friday, September 16th. This is part of the process to meet the November 1st cut-off date.

Wert says that the “first reading” of the ordinance will need to occur at least 10-days before the adoption of the plan. The ordinance can not take effect before 30-days after that. “Friday's meeting is an important step toward meeting the state deadline,” Wert said.

The ordinance being considered is based upon the Part-Mountain-Upland-Desert plan favored by their board at their August 9th meeting. The Supervisors believe this plan meets state and federal guidelines for redistricting.

The county hired National Demographics Corporation to consult on their proposal. The districting specialists have already analyzed the plan and they believe it complies with the following criteria:

1) The population deviation between the most-populous and least-populous districts is less than 3 percent.

2) The plan complies with Section 2 of the Federal Voting Rights Act.

3) Each district consists of contiguous territory.

4) To the degree possible, given the total criteria, each district is as compact as possible; respects communities of interest; follows visible natural and man-made geographical and topographical features; and preserves the current district's population and territory.

This is the fifth public hearing on the matter, Wert says. The public can view the plan before the meeting at:
