(Best Syndication News) - The 2011 Great California ShakeOut Drill happened today at 10:20 a.m. with around 8.6 million participants. This annual event helps businesses, schools, government, emergency officials, and California residents to prepare for the day that the big earthquake does happen.

The event has expanded to more participants this year. In 2010, there were 7.6 million participants. The majority of participants this year came from the K-12 school districts with 5,807,627 participants for the 2011 ShakeOut Drill. The second largest group was colleges and universities with 1,309,168 participants. Businesses also participated with 475,867 signing up for the drill. In San Bernardino County, 592,981 residents participated in this year's event.

The concern is that that San Andreas Fault is overdue for a major earthquake. The US Geological Survey and other government agencies have suggested that Southern California could suffer a major economic disaster if the big one did happen. Scientist are predicting a 99 percent likelihood that an earthquake strong enough to cause loss of human life and substantial damage to property will happen in California at least once within the next 30 years.
